The 4th meeting of the Igbo Union in Stoke-on-Trent was held on February 11, 2023, at Sacred Heart Parish Social Center in Hanley. The meeting was well-attended by members of the community, who were eager to discuss the progress of the union and to plan for future events.
The meeting began with an opening prayer, followed by introductions of new members, including Ugochukwu and Uchechukwu. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.
The treasurer, Ugonna, gave a financial report, which showed that the union had a balance of £50.50 after the expenses of the previous year. It was agreed that the money would be used to cover the costs of future events and to register the union with the local council.
The chairman, Antony-Claret, then gave an update on the progress of the constitution and registration of the union. He said that the constitution committee has made some progress and will present their report in the next meeting. He also said that he has made enquiries about the registration of the union and that it is possible to register the union without a constitution.
The meeting then discussed the bye-laws of the union. The bye-laws are a set of rules that govern the operation of the union. The meeting agreed on a number of bye-laws, including:
- The union will provide financial assistance to members who are bereaved, married, have children, graduate, or are sick.
- The union will organize a number of social events throughout the year, including picnics, excursions, and seminars.
- The union will meet bi-monthly.
- The union will be open to women.
The meeting also discussed the registration of members. The registration fee is £10 and the monthly dues are £5. All payments should be made to the treasurer, Ugonna.
In other business, the meeting discussed the possibility of serving food at future meetings. The meeting decided to wait until the next meeting to make a decision on this matter.
The meeting adjourned at 6:30pm.
I am excited about the progress of the Igbo Union in Stoke-on-Trent. I believe that this union will play a vital role in the community and will help to strengthen the bonds between Igbo people in Stoke. I encourage all members of the community to get involved and help to make this union a success.
